Ramayana Set to Become India’s Most Expensive Film Ever at ₹4,000 Crore
The long-awaited Ramayana adaptation, helmed by director Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra, is officially the most expensive Indian film ever, boasting a colossal ₹4,000 crore (~$480 million) budget. Featuring a stellar cast including Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Yash, Sunny Deol, and Amitabh Bachchan, the project is expected to redefine Indian cinematic scale.

A Mythological Epic on a Global Scale
With a vision to rival global mythological sagas like The Lord of the Rings and Dune, the upcoming Ramayana is being built from the ground up as a pan-Indian, VFX-heavy cinematic universe that remains true to the epic’s spiritual roots while embracing modern storytelling and visual grandeur.
Producer Namit Malhotra, CEO of Prime Focus and owner of VFX powerhouse DNEG, has promised “a spectacle that India can take pride in globally.” DNEG, which has won multiple Academy Awards for films like Tenet and Dune, will oversee the VFX execution—reportedly accounting for more than 60% of the film’s budget.
The Cast: Mythology Meets Star Power
The film’s casting has generated huge buzz:
- Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram
- Sai Pallavi as Sita
- Yash (of KGF fame) as Ravana
- Sunny Deol as Hanuman
- Ravi Dubey as Lakshman
- Amitabh Bachchan rumored as Dasharatha
These choices aim to blend pan-India appeal with serious acting credibility, enhancing both box office and international visibility.

Budget Breakdown & Global Strategy
At ₹4,000 crore, Ramayana overshadows previous big-budget Indian films like:
- Adipurush (~₹700 crore)
- RRR (~₹550 crore)
- Brahmastra (~₹400 crore trilogy plan)
The budget covers:
- State-of-the-art VFX and CGI environments
- 3-part epic storytelling structure
- Global distribution partnerships
- Multi-language versions (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and English)
The project is being positioned as a franchise, with future spin-offs and streaming releases already in the works.
Cultural Weight & Expectations
With India’s spiritual heritage at the center, Ramayana isn’t just a film—it’s a cultural responsibility. Tiwari and Malhotra have reportedly collaborated with religious scholars and Sanskrit consultants to ensure accuracy and sensitivity.
“We want to tell this story not just to Indians, but to the world,” said Tiwari in a press release.
