Prime Video India Introduces Ads From June 17: Opt-Out Available for ₹699/Year
Starting June 17, 2025, Prime Video India has officially launched its ad-supported viewing model, inserting 4 to 6 minutes of ads per hour into its content library. Users can opt for an ad-free experience with a new paid add-on at ₹699/year or ₹129/month.

A First for Indian Streaming: Ads on Premium Content
Amazon’s decision brings Prime Video India in line with global trends, where platforms like Netflix and Disney+ have already adopted tiered pricing models. All Prime members will now experience limited advertisements unless they subscribe to the ad-free plan.
The rollout includes:
- 4–6 minutes of ads/hour during shows and movies.
- No ads on kids’ content or Amazon Originals purchased digitally.
- Smooth integration: Ads are set to play before and during playback, similar to how Hulu or YouTube operate.

What This Means for Viewers
While the move might frustrate some loyal subscribers, Amazon is positioning the shift as a way to keep subscription costs lower while supporting premium content production. The ad-supported tier could also help boost advertiser reach, tapping into India’s vast digital audience.
This change also allows Amazon to stay competitive with Netflix’s “Standard with Ads” and JioCinema’s freemium model, as the OTT market becomes increasingly ad-centric.
Early Reactions
Social media reactions have been mixed. While some users appreciate the lower base price being maintained, others criticize the intrusion of ads into paid content. Industry experts believe this hybrid monetization model is likely to become the new norm across Indian OTT platforms.
