The sequel to Gully Boy, India’s groundbreaking hip-hop drama, is officially in development. Produced by Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti, and directed by Arjun Varain Singh, the follow-up to the 2019 cult classic is expected to begin filming by the end of 2025.

Bollywood’s hip-hop revolution is set to get louder. Over six years since Gully Boy electrified Indian cinema with its raw energy and poetic grit, fans can now celebrate the official confirmation of a sequel. Producers Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti will once again helm the project under the Tiger Baby Films banner, but this time the directorial reins are being handed to Kho Gaye Hum Kahan director Arjun Varain Singh.
The original Gully Boy (2019), starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, was loosely based on the lives of Indian rappers DIVINE and Naezy, and introduced global audiences to Mumbai’s underground hip-hop scene. With breakout tracks like “Apna Time Aayega” and “Mere Gully Mein,” the film not only swept awards but also sparked a cultural shift—bringing Indian rap to the mainstream.
What We Know So Far
While plot details remain tightly under wraps, sources close to the production hint that the sequel will explore the evolution of Indian hip-hop post-viral fame—tackling themes like digital fame, collaboration versus competition, and staying true to one's voice in a corporatized industry.
Arjun Varain Singh, who debuted with Kho Gaye Hum Kahan, is expected to bring a grittier, documentary-like style to the sequel, infusing it with urban realism and emotional depth. The shift in director signals a fresh perspective while retaining the core ethos of the first film.
Casting updates are expected soon, though fans are hoping to see Ranveer Singh reprise his role as Murad, the rags-to-riches rapper who became the voice of a generation.

The Beat Goes On
Zoya Akhtar confirmed on Instagram:
“The movement didn’t end. It evolved. We’re just tuning into a new frequency.”
Given how Gully Boy helped birth India’s indie hip-hop boom, the sequel arrives at a time when desi rap is more influential than ever, both culturally and commercially.
